How To Steam Hair

Steaming your hair is a great way to keep it soft and hydrated. To get the best results, you should always start with clean hair, so wash it first. Once your hair is clean, apply your favorite conditioner and make sure it covers all of your hair.

The next thing is to steam it. You can steam your hair using a few different methods. One simple way is to use a hot, damp cloth. Place it over your hair, then cover everything with a shower cap to trap the heat. If you have a hooded steamer, you can use that instead. The steam will help the conditioner soak deep into your hair, making it even more effective.

When you are done, your hair will feel fresh, smooth, and shiny. Below is a deeper explanation of both methods.

How to Steam Your Hair Using a Hot Towel

The following are steps to take when you want to steam your hair with a hot towel:

1. Apply Conditioner or Oil to Your Hair

Take about two tablespoons of conditioner and rub it between your hands. Starting at the roots, smoothen the hair conditioner down the length of your hair. Make sure every part is covered. If you run out before reaching the end, just add a little more. If you prefer, you can use hair oil like coconut or olive oil instead. They will help moisturize your hair.

2. Put on a Shower Cap

If you have long hair, tie it into a low bun first. Then, place a shower cap over your head. Tuck in any loose strands so that every part of your hair will be covered.

3. Prepare a Damp Face Cloth

Wet a small towel or cloth and squeeze out all the water until it is damp, not dripping. This is important because hot water dripping from the cloth could burn your skin. If you do not have a face cloth, you can use a small towel instead.

4. Heat the Cloth in the Microwave

Place the damp cloth in the microwave for 2 minutes on the highest setting. The heat will create steam that will come out from the cloth. This steam will help condition your hair. If the microwave plate is dirty, put the cloth in a microwave-safe bowl to keep it clean.

5. Place the Hot Cloth on Your Head

Carefully place the heated cloth over the shower cap on your head. If it feels like the cloth is slipping, just adjust it. Use gloves or a potholder to avoid burning your hands while handling the hot cloth.

6. Cover With Another Shower Cap or Bag

After placing a warm face cloth on your head, cover it with another shower cap. This will help trap heat and create steam, which is great for your hair. If the shower cap does not fit perfectly, just stretch it over the cloth. You can use a plastic bag instead if you do not have another shower cap. It will work the same way.

7. Let the Steam Work

Leave the face cloth on your head for about 30 minutes. This will give the steam time to soak into your hair and make it softer. Try to stay still so the cloth will not fall off. You can watch TV, read, or just relax. If you want extra soft hair, you can steam it for up to 2 hours. However, you need to remember to reheat the cloth every 20–30 minutes if it cools down.

8. Rinse With Cold Water

Once you are done steaming, take off the shower cap and face cloth, then rinse your hair with cold water. The cold water will moisturize and smoothen your hair by sealing in the moisture. Let your hair air-dry instead of using heat. This will help to keep it healthy. You will enjoy the soft, moisturized feeling for about a week! Just remember not to steam your hair too often, as doing it too much can make your hair weaker.

How to Steam Your Hair Using a Hooded Dryer

The following are steps to take when you want to steam your hair with a hooded dryer:

1. Apply Deep Conditioner to Your Hair

Start by spreading a deep conditioner all over your hair. Use a small amount and work it from the roots to the tips. You can use your regular conditioner or a special deep conditioner. Try to choose products with natural ingredients because they will help you protect your hair’s natural oils.

Step 2: Sit Under a Hooded Dryer for an Hour

Place your head under a hooded dryer and set it to steam mode. The steam will help the conditioner soak deep into your hair. If your dryer does not have a steam option, use the lowest heat setting or consider buying a steamer. You can also check with a salon to see if you can use their hooded dryer for a small fee. Make sure all of your hair fits under the hood. You can tie it up if necessary.

Step 3: Rinse Your Hair With Cold Water

After steaming, rinse your hair in the shower with cold water. The cold water will seal the moisture in your hair. Let the water run through your hair, and gently use your hands to help rinse out the conditioner.

Step 4: Let Your Hair Air Dry

Instead of using heat, allow your hair to dry naturally. This will help you avoid hair damage and keep your hair healthy. Depending on how thick and long your hair is, it might take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours to fully dry.

Steaming your hair is a simple and effective way to keep it healthy, soft, and full of moisture. It works best when you start with clean hair. After washing, apply conditioner evenly. The steam will help the conditioner soak into your hair. This will give it the moisture and nutrients it needs. If you steam your hair regularly, it will stay shiny, smooth, and strong.
