7 Design Mistakes That Can Make Your Home Feel Unwelcoming

Design mistakes that can make your home feel unwelcoming are essentially decor errors that are not obvious. If you invite at least one person over to your place occasionally, it is essential to eliminate the interior design mistakes in this piece.

In this piece, we discuss the design faults in your living space and offer quick fixes for each issue. So, to improve your social connections and guest-hosting points, comb through the following design mistakes and fixes and start making the necessary amendments to your apartment.

1. Poor Lighting

Just as inadequate storage may result in uncontrollable clutter, poor lighting may also cause a lack of color in your home. In both isolated rooms and connected walkways, proper lighting is essential to bring out the color and design of cold materials and brightly colored decor.

The golden rule of home lighting is that there should never be too many lights and lamps. However, it is essential to be mindful of the varying light intensity requirements in different spaces.

2. Overly Formal Decor

Homes with overly formal decor seem like museums to guests. The furniture is expensive and delicate in such homes, causing guests to tread on eggshells when visiting. It is one thing to have an exquisitely decorated home and another for that same home to be a haven of comfort.

So, while planning your interior decor, endeavor to scale down on fancy and expensive items. Similarly, avoid using overly light colors, like sofas with a silky white finish. Instead, use textured furniture finish and decor that makes guests feel comfortable in your living space.

3. Uncomfortable Furniture

Imagine calling at a friend’s apartment only to be greeted by too many pillows on the sofa. This is just an example of overdoing the furnishings of a living space. Meanwhile, that is just one extreme of uncomfortable furniture installations in the home.

Another extreme appears when you host a dinner party at your home. Dining chairs need to be comfortable and have lovely cushions because guests will likely stay seated for several minutes after their meals. Likewise, a living room should have comfortable sofas with just enough throw pillows.

4. Lack of Personal Touches

Home developers sometimes see a property as just a number on a spreadsheet and are more concerned about the profits from that project. So, it takes the ingenuity of the actual occupant to add some personal touches to make the house a home.

For folks who live in a property that exudes the vibes of a housing project, eliminating the lack of personal touches is vital. Simply add interior designs that stand your living space out, and where the property is yours, use a unique landscape design to distinguish your lawn and yard from others in the neighborhood.

The above are suggestions for eliminating your home’s lack of personal touches. We trust your ingenuity to come up with even more creative ideas tailored to your living space.

5. Not Using a Balanced Color Scheme

Lack of color can be a joykiller for the interior design of living spaces. Besides the regular overcoat of neutral paints and monotonous colors used in painting living spaces, it doesn’t hurt to add a little design to interrupt the color static occasionally.

So, if your living space still lacks personal touches, check online for the best color blends to complement the existing paint on your walls. When you’re done tweaking your home’s color scheme, it will seem like you moved into a new one.

6. Neglected Entryway

The entryway to your home or apartment gives guests their first impression of the living space. A neglected entryway, with footwear, shoe boxes, badminton rackets, and other items lying around, can be a great turn-off for visitors. Regardless of how lavishly decorated your home interior is, it may be difficult to escape the haunting images from the neglected entryway.

So, the fix we recommend here is decluttering that neglected entryway, and don’t leave it drab or static. Instead, introduce a touch of nature with ornamental plants and flower pots.

7. Cluttered Spaces or Sparsely Decorated Spaces

We are dealing with two sides of a single road here; one is cluttered spaces, and the other is sparsely decorated spaces. When guests come calling at your home, they subconsciously look out for cues that tell them to either relax or be on edge. Cluttered spaces are one of the common triggers of discomfort in guests.

Likewise, neglecting and undecorating entire rooms can seem eerie to your guests. It gets worse when you use the space in question and allow guests in but leave it appearing like a ghost house. For example, imagine building or renting a house with large built-in bookshelves and only a handful of books.

These seven design mistakes that can make your home feel unwelcoming are easy to correct if you follow our guide. Also, adequate lighting should be used to brighten even the cold materials. Remove clutters on walkways to isolated rooms, even when struggling with inadequate storage, and maximize the available space. Finally, endeavor to tone down on overly formal decor.
