8 Skincare Trends Dermatologists Warn Against Trying

Skincare fads come and go, but not all of them are safe. Some trends that seem harmless or even beneficial can actually damage your skin in the long run. From skipping sunscreen to experimenting with DIY skincare, many popular practices might do more harm than good. Before you jump on the latest bandwagon, let’s break down some of the skincare trends dermatologists warn against so you can protect your skin like a pro.

1. Consuming Supplements Randomly

We all want glowing skin, but randomly popping supplements isn’t how to get there. Not all vitamins are safe in high doses, and some can even cause breakouts or irritation. Without guidance from a professional, you might be doing more harm than good.

Instead, focus on a balanced diet and talk to a doctor before adding anything new. A good skincare routine starts from the inside, but guessing your nutrient needs isn’t the answer.

2. Using Beef Tallow on Your Face

Some influencers swear by using beef tallow as a natural moisturizer, but dermatologists strongly disagree. While it contains fatty acids, it’s also comedogenic, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Plus, it’s not the most hygienic option. Instead of following questionable skincare trends dermatologists warn against, stick to tried-and-true moisturizing products designed for your skin type.

3. Skipping Sunscreen (Big Mistake)

If you’re still debating whether sunscreen is necessary, here’s the truth: it’s non-negotiable. UV rays don’t just cause sunburn; they speed up aging and even trigger dark spots.

Even on cloudy days, your skin needs protection. Skipping SPF is one of the biggest skincare trends dermatologists warn against, and for good reason. A daily SPF 30 or higher should be your best friend, rain or shine.

4. Performing DIY Cosmetic Treatments

From at-home chemical peels to microneedling, the internet is full of DIY skincare hacks. But here’s the problem: these treatments require professional training. Done incorrectly, they can cause burns, scarring, or infections. Just because you can buy a tool online doesn’t mean you should use it without expertise. Instead, visit a licensed professional for treatments like peels, lasers, or advanced facials. When it comes to your skin, don’t take unnecessary risks.

5. Over-Exfoliating for “Glass Skin”

Exfoliation is excellent, but overdoing it? That’s a disaster waiting to happen. Many people believe scrubbing daily will lead to smooth, flawless skin, which often leads to irritation, sensitivity, and breakouts. Over-exfoliation can strip your skin’s natural barrier, making it prone to redness and dryness.

Stick to gentle exfoliation 2 to 3 times a week and always follow up with moisturizing products to keep your skin balanced and healthy.

6. Using Harsh Ingredients Without a Patch Test

Some skincare trends push powerful chemicals like retinol or acids without proper guidance. Jumping into potent ingredients too fast can cause redness, peeling, or even burns. One of the worst skincare trends dermatologists warn against is applying new products without a patch test. Always introduce potent ingredients slowly; if something stings or burns excessively, it’s probably too harsh for your skin.

7. Misunderstanding Skin Cycling

Skin cycling is a trendy concept, but many people misapply it. The idea is to rotate active ingredients throughout the week to prevent irritation, but it doesn’t work for everyone.

If you have sensitive skin or use too many harsh chemicals, this routine can still cause over-exfoliation and damage. Instead of following a one-size-fits-all trend, listen to your skin’s needs and adjust your routine accordingly.

8. Skincare Swaps Without Research

Not all skincare products are interchangeable. Swapping a dermatologist-approved serum for a kitchen ingredient or a trendy natural alternative can backfire. Some swaps, like using lemon juice for brightening or coconut oil for moisturizing, can disrupt your skin’s pH and cause irritation. Before making skincare swaps, do your research and make sure the new product is actually beneficial.

Protect Your Skin the Right Way

Trendy doesn’t always mean safe. Many skincare trends dermatologists warn against seem harmless but can damage your skin long-term. Whether skipping sunscreen, over-exfoliating, or using harsh ingredients, knowing what to avoid is just as important as knowing what to use.

Want healthy skin? Stick to a balanced routine, listen to experts, and choose products that suit your skin type. When in doubt, always consult a dermatologist before trying the latest fad.
